chirrup

a red-headed woodpecker on a dead tree snag at sunset. the sunset casts gold light on the left side of the snag, and on the undersides of the orange and red leaves above the woodpecker. the woodpecker has a white body, black and white wings, and a bold red head, with a thick grey beak.

A special rare-to-the area visitor has decided to spend the winter here — I’d never tried following up on a rare bird report before for fear of overcrowding, but there were so many repeat reports over so many days that it seemed worth the try. Within minutes, there he was! He is extremely handsome and amenable to photographs.
